The Shih Tzu is a small, sturdy companion dog with a short muzzle, a chrysanthemum-like face, and a long, flowing double coat. The tail is heavily plumed and carried over the back.

Description:: The Shih Tzu is a companion breed from the Chinese imperial court, related to other East Asian sleeve dogs. The name is often translated as lion dog. The AKC places it in the Toy Group; the UKC classes it as a Companion Dog.
Temperament:: Shih Tzu are typically outgoing, affectionate, and closely tied to their people. They can be stubborn and do not enjoy being left alone all day. They are sturdier than they look.
Training:: They learn household manners if training stays patient. Keep sessions short.
Care & Grooming:: The long coat mats if it is not brushed to the skin daily. Many owners keep a shorter puppy clip. Keep the face clean around the eyes.
Shedding:: Low; loose hair is held in the coat.
Health:: Shih Tzu may develop breathing trouble from the short muzzle, eye injuries, and kidney disease in some lines. Avoid heat and use a harness.
Lifespan:: 10–16 years
