Description:: The Rat Terrier is an American farm ratter and hunting companion, developed from Fox Terriers and other small working dogs. The AKC lists the breed in FSS; the UKC classes it as a Terrier.
Temperament:: Rat Terriers are typically lively, affectionate with their household, and game on vermin. They can be vocal and may chase small animals. They need more activity than their size suggests.
Training:: They learn quickly and get bored with repetition. Keep sessions short and socialize them while they are young.
Care & Grooming:: The short coat needs only a weekly wipe. Use a harness on walks.
Shedding:: Low to moderate.
Health:: Rat Terriers may develop patellar luxation and allergies. Keep them lean.
Lifespan:: 12–18 years
Litter Size:: 4–6 puppies
