The Miniature Australian Shepherd is a small-to-medium herding dog that looks like a scaled-down Australian Shepherd: a moderate coat, a docked or natural bob tail in some dogs, and merle, black, or red coloring with copper and white.

A small herding dog for an active house; a coat that sheds, a watchful bark, and a mind that invents trouble without a job.

The Miniature Australian Shepherd was developed in the United States as a smaller ranch and companion herding dog. It is related to the Australian Shepherd, not to the Australian Kelpie.

Weight: 15–40 pounds
Color: Blue merle, red merle, black, or red, with or without copper and white
Coat: Medium length, straight or wavy, with a weather-resistant undercoat
Lifespan: 12–15 years
Litter size: 4–6 puppies

Temperament

Mini Aussies are typically intense, loyal, and tied to their handler. They need a job and can become noisy or nippy if they are left idle. They may try to herd children or other pets.

Training

They learn at speed and get bored with repetition. Start herding or sport work early.

Care and grooming

Brush weekly, more often when the undercoat blows.

Shedding

Moderate; heavier seasonally.

Health

As with other Aussie types, eye disease, hip dysplasia, and the MDR1 drug-sensitivity gene can occur. Ask breeders about testing. Do not breed merle to merle.
