The Japanese Chin is a small, square companion dog with a short muzzle, large dark eyes, and a long, profuse coat. The tail is plumed and carried over the back. The expression is characteristic and almost oriental.

Description:: The Japanese Chin is a companion breed of the Japanese court, related to other East Asian sleeve dogs. It is a house dog, not a sporting spaniel. The AKC places it in the Toy Group; the UKC classes it as a Companion Dog.
Temperament:: Chins are typically catlike, affectionate with their own people, and reserved with strangers. They can be sensitive and do not enjoy rough play. They notice everything in the household.
Training:: They learn household manners if training stays gentle. Keep sessions short.
Care & Grooming:: Brush the long coat several times a week. Keep the face clean around the prominent eyes.
Shedding:: Moderate.
Health:: Japanese Chin may develop heart murmurs, eye injuries, and the breathing trouble common to short-muzzled dogs. Avoid heat and use a harness.
Lifespan:: 10–12 years
Litter Size:: 1–3 puppies
